Guila Bustabo (1916 - 2002)

Guila Bustabo’s first documented teacher of note was Chicago-based Leon Sametini, a pupil of Ysaÿe. When Persinger accepted her at The Juilliard School he thought her very good but too old, meaning that it was difficult to retrain an already-established talent. Nonetheless he brought her successfully to the attention of critics and fellow musicians with her Carnegie Hall début in 1931, where she favourably impressed Toscanini.

At The Juilliard Bustabo was a classmate of Yehudi Menuhin. She envied him his escape from parental clutches and resented her own mother’s persistent involvement in her career. It was her mother who decided she must stay in Europe during World War II, performing in Germany and Nazi-occupied countries. Bustabo’s association with Dutch conductor Willem Mengelberg resulted in her arrest by the US Army in Paris. Finding it very difficult subsequently to work in America, she was thus active in Europe during the 1950s and 1960s, with a very solid reputation for lively and impassioned performances.
