Gary Kirkpatrick

The pianist Gary Kirkpatrick was born in Manhattan, Kansas and grew up in Junction City, Kansas where he graduated with highest honours from the Junction City Junior/Senior High School. He received a full scholarship to study at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York where he also graduated with highest honours. While at Eastman he was chosen to be pianist with the state-sponsored Eastman Philharmonia Orchestra with which he participated in tours of the Soviet Union and most European and Near-Eastern countries. He continued his musical studies in Vienna at the Academy for Music and Dramatic Arts broadening his range and artistry under the celebrated pianist Dieter Weber. While in Vienna, he gave many recitals, made recordings and won top prizes at the International Beethoven Competition, the Stepanov Piano Competition and the International Piano Competition in Jaen, Spain. He made his acclaimed New York début at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City and frequent New York engagements followed, most notably at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. A strong proponent of twentieth-century music, he has explored new horizons in compositions created especially for him during his tenure as pianist with the VerdehrTrio, recording more than ten albums on the Crystal, Corélia, Leonardo and Amadeo labels. Gary Kirkpatrick has been invited as guest artist and teacher by many of the world’s leading conservatories as far as China, India, Australia, Indonesia and Egypt.
