Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Manistina was born in Saratov and trained there and at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow. She was winner of first prize in the 2002 Operalia Competition. She made her début as Marfa in Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina in Saratov, a rôle she has repeated many times. Other rôles have included Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera), Azucena (Il trovatore), Amneris (Aida) and, at Covent Garden, Sosostris (A Midsummer Marriage) and Marina (Boris Godunov), with appearances in the London Promenade Concerts in works by Stravinsky. Her career has brought engagements throughout Europe and in the United States at major opera houses.
