The Symphony Orchestra of El Vallès was established in 1987 under the auspices of the Association of Friends of the Sabadell Opera. In the following year it became the only self-governing Spanish symphony orchestra. While this form of organization may be usual in other European countries, in Spain the orchestra was a pioneer, holding a very special place in concert life. Over the years it has consolidated its artistic position, offering varied programmes, ranging from lighter music, and music from the cinema to weightier repertoire. In recognition of its services to the promotion of classical music it was in 1992 awarded the National Music Prize of Catalonia. The orchestra's hundred or so annual concerts centre on the city of Sabadell, with appearances as the regular orchestra of the Opera in Catalonia and at the Palau de la Música Catalana. Distinguished soloists and conductors have performed with the orchestra, and the principal conductors have included Albert Argudo from 1988 to 1992, followed by Jordi Mora until 1997 , then succeeded by the present conductor Salvador Brotons, a recognised composer who is also principal conductor of the Vancouver Symphony of Washington and principal guest conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearics in the city of Palma. The El Vallès Symphony Orchestra is sponsored by Pioneer Electronics, the Foundation Banc Sabadell, the City Council of Sabadell and the Foundation Caixa Sabadell, and enjoys the support of the Department of Culture of the Government of Catalonia.
