Born in Milan, Danilo Formaggia studied piano and singing, completing his training under Alfredo Kraus and Magda Olivero. In 1998, the only Italian tenor in the contest, he won the Enrico Caruso Prize. Since his début in 1996 in Paisiello's Due Contesse and Cimarosa's Due Baroni at the Opera Buffa Festival he has developed a brilliant career with appearances in leading theatres in Italy and abroad, collaborating with distinguished conductors and stage directors. His repertoire includes operas by Piccinni, Paisiello, Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Mascagni, Richard Strauss, and Stravinsky, in addition to works by contemporary composers. His recordings include Mascagni's Le Maschere, Piccinni's La Cecchina ossia la buona figliola, Bellini's I Capuleti e Montecchi, Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with Claudio Abbado and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in the Mozart anniversary year.
