Bharat Chandra is a clarinettist whose earnest passion for music and live interaction with audiences has taken him across the world as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Currently principal clarinet of the Sarasota Orchestra, Bharat Chandra began formal studies at Southern Methodist University and continued through the New England Conservatory and the New World Symphony, under Michael Tilson Thomas. During the summer months, Chandra serves as principal clarinet with the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, under Marin Alsop. In 2008, Bharat gave the US première of Mark Anthony Turnage’s Riffs and Refrains with Alsop and the Festival Orchestra. During the autumn of 2011, he was guest principal clarinet at the Sydney Opera House. Bharat Chandra is the son of the late Indian poet GS Sharat Chandra. His wife, Anne, is an accomplished violinist.
