Arleen Auger (1939 - 1993)

Arleen Augér studied with L.D. Frey in Los Angeles and completed her studies with honors and a first prize in the Los Angeles singing competition. After taking a general course of music at California State University in Long Beach (theory, music history, piano and violin), she taught music in Los Angeles, Denver and Chicago from 1963 to 1967. At the same time she studied voice with Ralph Errolle in Chicago. In 1967 she made her début at the Vienna State Opera, singing the ‘Queen of the Night’ under Joseph Krips. Until 1974 she was a member of this ensemble and took additional engagements at all the leading opera houses of Europe. Miss Augér made a guest appearance at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater in 1971 and gave débuts at La Scala in Milan in 1975 and at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 1978. She has sung at forty different festivals, held concerts and lieder recitals in Europe, USA, Japan and Israel, and made many television appearances, over 150 radio broadcasts and one hundred gramophone recordings, many of which have received awards. From 1977 to 1984 she was professor of voice at the Frankfurt Musikhochschule. She has held master-classes in singing and interpretation in Eugene, Oregon (USA), Frankfurt, Kassel, Salzburg and Stuttgart.
