The mezzo-soprano Alexandra Papadjiakou was born in Cyprus and studied at the Paris Conservatoire, winning prizes in the Chant et Art Lyrique of the CNSM in Paris and in the Toti dal Monte Competition. She made her début in France at the festival of Aix-en-Provence and has appeared with the Paris Opéra-Comique, the Capitole in Toulouse and at the Opéra of Montpellier. In Italy she has undertaken engagements with the Italian radio in Milan and at the Siena festival. With a repertoire principally from nineteenth-century Italian opera, she has won particular success with the rôles of Arsace in Rossini’s Semiramide, Mafio Orsini in Lucrezia Borgia, Nerestano in Bellini’s Zaira and in Traetta’s Antigone. She took the principal rôle in Graun’s Montezuma at the Berlin Deutsche Oper, a production also seen at the Festival di Due Mondi in Spoleto, and took part in the Paris Bastille Opéra Boris Godunov under Myung-Whun Chung.
