Jonathan Carney

Jonathan Carney comes from a unique musical background, all six members of his family having graduated from the Juilliard School in New York. After completing studies with Ivan Galamian and Christine Dethier, he was awarded a Leverhulme Fellowship and moved to London to continue his studies at the Royal College of Music. After several years serving as leader and soloist with a number of international ensembles, Jonathan Carney was appointed leader of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1991, appearing with them as a soloist throughout Britain and abroad with. In 1994 he was appointed leader of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Recent solo performances have included concertos by Bruch and Nielsen, the Brahms Double Concerto and Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending. He has made a number of recordings, including concertos by Mozart and Vivaldi, and sonatas by Brahms, Beethoven and Franck. Jonathan Carney is director of the Royal Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble and has enjoyed a long-standing collaboration with the pianist Ronan O'Hora. On this recording he plays a fine Dominico Montagnana violin, on generous loan from Peter Biddulph.
