Hong-Mei Xiao


Winner of the first prize in the Geneva International Music Competition, Hong-Mei Xiao is the only viola-player to have won the award for the last sixteen years. A recipient of the Patek Philippe Grand prize, she has made an international career as a soloist and recitalist, with performances in major concert-halls and with orchestras of the greatest distinction throughout the world. Born into a musical family in China, Hong-Mei Xiao started her violin studies with her father, the composer Xiao Heng, (to whose memory she has dedicated this disc) and subsequently studied at the Shanghai Conservatory, receiving the Asian Cultural Council Award. She completed her training in the United States of America at New York State University and Stony Brook and was also the winner of the Aspen Music Festival Concerto Competition. Her concert performances have been broadcast and televised internationally and she has won particular distinction for her performance of Frank Martin’s Ballade for Viola and Orchestra and for her appearance as soloist in the first performance of Schnittke’s Viola Concerto in Geneva, with the Orchestre de la Suisse
