Michael Thompson
"Thompson is not only technically brilliant, but plays with delectable lightness and point, bringign out wit and finales, as well as tenderness in slow movements. As conductor and director, he draws sparkling and refined playing from the Bournemouth Sinfonietta...An outstandin...issue..."
Gramophone
Michael Thompson is internationally acknowledged as one of the world's leading horn soloists, working world-wide at the highest artistic level. During the last three years he has toured in the USA five times, Japan twice and returned yet again to tour Australia for the ABC. In the same period in Europe he has toured with the Polish Radio Orchestra, appeared at two Prague Spring Festival whilst his UK engagements have included performing Britten's
Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings
with Ian Bostridge at the opening concert of the New British Library in London, at the Philharmonie Gasteig in Munich and for three performances of Strauss' Horn Concerto no.2 at the Berlin Konzerthaus. As a prolific recording artist Michael Thompson has performed all he major classical and Romantic horn repertoire plus works of his own time by messiaen, Musgrave, Birtwistle, Maxwell Davies and Tippett, also recording - using period instruments - many of the obligato horn parts of Bach and Handel, for Decca, EMI, Chandos, Hyperion and Naxos/Marco Polo. The Michael Thompson Wind Quintet has made a number of highly regarded recordings with the quintet working on major projects to record the complete works of Reicha and Krommer. Similarly, the Michael
Thompson Horn Quartet also has the finest reputation, receiving superlative reviews for its EMI recording of Tippett's Sonata for Four Horns. Recent concerts by this quartet have included appearances at the Royal Albert Hall in London and at Carnegie Hall in New York, with Sir Paul McCartney. Michael Thompson is a noted champion of new music with over fifty works for horn and orchestra from the latter half of the 20th century in his published concerto list of repertoire which includes works specifically written for him by Anthony Powers, Michael Berkeley, Simon Bainbridge and Bruce Broughton. Michael Thompson is in great demand throughout the world as a teacher, for giving masterclasses and a regular choice for competition juries. In the UK he holds the Aubrey Brain Chair as horn professor at the Royal Academy of Music of which he is also a Fellow. Michael Thompson plays on an instrument made by Paxman of London.
