David Sotgiu

After obtaining a diploma in oboe at the Conservatory of Perugia, David Sotgiu turned to singing under the guidance of Carlo Bergonzi, and then with Carmen Gonzalez and Sesto Bruscantini, continuing his training with Giuseppe Morino and Paride Venturi. He now studies with Stefano Rinaldi Miliani.

Sotgiu has sung in several choruses, often as a soloist, among them that of the Santa Cecilia Academy. He is a permanent member of the Coro Lirico dell’Umbria, with which in 1999 he appeared as soloist in two Masses by Perosi performed for the Sagra Musicale Umbra; and also of the Music Chapel of Assisi’s St Francis Basilica, with which he has sung rare seventeenth and eighteenth-century works, and given premières of contemporary compositions. In 1998 he was the protagonist in Carissimi’s oratorio Jephte, at the Tribuna Dantesca of the National Library of Florence. As a soloist he has appeared at St Peter’s in Rome (for the Artists’ Jubilee), and in the Assisi Basilica for its re-opening after restoration, an event broadcast live throughout Europe.

He has recorded a CD, Laudate et benedicete, mi’ Signore, featuring unpublished works by eighteenth-century Franciscan composers. Among his more recent performances were the rôle of Artabano in Rust’s Artaserse (performed in Perugia) and his participation in a recital at the Teatro Sociale in Rovigo, with Mariella Devia, Armando Ariostini and Fabio Previati.
