Stephen Schultz

Stephen Schultz, called “among the most flawless artists on the baroque flute” by the San José Mercury News, is principal and solo flautist with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and performs with many other leading early music groups. Concert tours have taken him throughout Europe and North America with featured appearances at the Mostly Mozart Festival and Carnegie Hall in New York, Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Holland, Schultz also holds degrees from the California Institute of the Arts and the California State University of San Francisco. He is currently an Artist Lecturer in Music History at Carnegie Mellon University. As solo, chamber, and orchestral player, Schultz appears on 45 recordings for such labels as Dorian, Naxos, Harmonia Mundi USA, New Albion, Amon Ra, and Koch International Classics. For this recording he plays on a baroque flute built by Rod Cameron of Mendocino, CA in 1985, a copy of an original by C. A. Grenser, circa 1770 (A = 415Hz).
