Born in 1958 in Granada, Luis García Montero studied at the university there, completing his doctoral thesis in 1985 on Rafael Alberti. As a poet he was a member of La otra sentimentalidad, leading to what was later known as the Poetry of Experience. The most outstanding characteristic of Luis García Montero is that his poems are biographical, with an almost dramatic or novelistic structure, where a character or protaganist relates or relives his history by means of memory, reminiscence or desire. His poetic language is colloquial, based on everyday situations, without recourse to the ‘dirty realism’ of, for example, Roger Wolfe. Luis García Montero is Professor in the Department of Spanish Literature at the University of Granada, the recipient of a number of distinguished awards, literary and academic.
