Mzilikazi Khumalo headed the department of African languages at the University of Witwatersrand and his compositions consist principally of settings of Zulu texts. His Five African Songs have been orchestrated by Peter Louis Van Dijk. Khumalo has had considerable experience with choirs and as an adjudicator in music competitions. He has composed many songs for national music contests and in 1986 provided a choral composition for the enthronement of Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
