Sergey Girshenko, a National Artist of Russia, has, since 2001, served as leader of the Evgeny Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra. During his career he has served as a leader of the best known orchestras of Russia, including those of the Bolshoy Theatre and the St Petersburg Philharmonic. Well known as a violinist-virtuoso, Sergey Girshenko studied at the Moscow Conservatory with David Oistrakh and Dmitry Tsyganov. He has appeared with outstanding musicians, including the pianist Sviatoslav Richter, the viola player Yuri Bashmet, and the violinist Oleg Kagan. His solo appearances have been in the major concert halls of Russia and abroad, collaborating with conductors such as Svetlanov, Gorenstein, Simonov, Lazarev, Rozhdestvensky, Temirkanov, Ashkenazy, and Ozawa. He has participated in leading music festivals, including those of Boston, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Schleswig-Holstein. In 1989 he was awarded the Italian Viotto d’Oro Prize. Sergey Girshenko has taught at the Moscow Conservatory since 1986, and has also given master-classes in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Brazil.
