The mezzo-soprano María José Suárez was born in Oviedo, where she graduated in Psychology and studied at the Conservatory, continuing, with a scholarship from the Principado de Asturias, at the Madrid Escuela Superior de Canto. Since her début in 1986 at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo she has appeared in leading theatres and concert halls in Spain with the most distinguished conductors. She has taken part in major musical series throughout the country, with opera seasons at the Teatro Lírico de la Zarzuela, the Madrid Teatro Real, in Bilbao, and in Oviedo. She appears regularly with the Grupo LIM, interpreting music of the twentieth century. Her recordings include Cristóbal Halffter’s Oficio de Difuntos, Gonzalo de Olavide’s Cante in Memoriam de García Lorca, Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, Modern Basque Composers with LIM, Joaquín Rodrigo’s El hijo fingido and Guridi’s El Caserío.
