Susan Milan (b1947)

Susan Milan is one of the UK's leading flautists and a highly respected teacher. A Scholar at the Royal College of Music, she was immediately appointed Principal Flute with Bournemouth Sinfonietta after graduation and four years later became the Principal Flute and first woman member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. After leaving the RPO she rapidly emerged as an international soloist and now regularly performs with major orchestras in Britain and Europe. She tours extensively throughout Europe, Scandinavia, USA and the Far East. She has commissioned and premiered a number of works by well known contemporary composers, including Jindrich Feld, Richard Rodney Bennett, Robert Saxton, Ole Schmidt, Carl Davis and John Rushby Smith. Susan Milan has a long established recital duo with lan Brown and has formed three ensembles, The London Sonata Group, Instrumental Quintet of London and Debussy Trio, and she broadcasts frequently for the BBC with these ensembles and as a soloist. Susan Milan is a Professor at the Royal College of Music.
