Stephen Milling was born in Copenhagen and trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in the years 1986–91. In 1991 he was admitted to the Opera Academy, where he took his diploma in 1994. Stephen Milling was immediately engaged by the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, where he has sung rôles such as Timur in Turandot, Don Fernando in Fidelio, the King in Aida, Count Waldner in Arabella, Hieronymus in Masquerade, Daland in the Flying Dutchman and King Mark in Tristan and Isolde. Opera houses abroad have also noticed his fine talent, and in 1997 he sang, among other rôles, Timur in Turandot at the Opera in Florence, at the Norwegian Opera and at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. In 1999 he made his début at La Scala, Milan, in Fidelio under Riccardo Muti. He has also sung Sarastro in the Magic Flute at the Deutsche Oper and at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. Stephen Milling represented Denmark in the Singer of the World competition in Cardiff in 1995. He has received the Gladsaxe Music Prize, the Artist’s Prize of the Danish Music Critics and the Aksel Schiøtz Prize.
