John McCabe is one of England's most distinguished composers, having composed operas, ballets, orchestral and chamber music. He has remained an active concert pianist, writer and critic, and has been the champion of many unjustly neglected British composers. Among those are Rawsthorne, a composer to whom his own music owes a debt of strong influences.
