Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra

Since its foundation as the Franconian Regional Orchestra the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra has been among the front rank of concert orchestras in the domain of classical repertoire. It gave its first concert on 29th July 1945 in the ruins of the Nuremberg Sebalduskirche, and assumed its present title on the dedication of the Meistersinger Hall in 1963. From 1949 until his death in 1967 Erich Kloss conducted the orchestra and was responsible for its development. Principal conductors who followed were Othmar Maga, Günter Neidlinger, Werner Andreas Albert, Klauspeter Seibel, Georg Schmöhe, Thomas Gabrisch, Jac van Steen and Bernhard Gueller. The Intendant of the orchestra since 2003 has been Lucius A. Hemmer. Already in the 1950s the orchestra was providing sound-tracks for American films, including Quo Vadis, and Ben Hur, and in 1993 won a Grammy Award in the category of Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the recording of the title melody of the television series Beauty and the Beast. Operatic work has included participation in the Heidenheim Opera Festival, and for some time the orchestra has been associated with the rediscovery of the operas of Siegfried Wagner and their recording, and with the performance and recording of the same composer’s concert works.
