Fernando Cobo

Born in Getxo in the Basque province of Biscay, the tenor Fernando Cobo started his musical training under María Folco, and was a member of the Bilbao Choral Society, directed by Gorka Sierra, appearing as a soloist in Orff’s Carmina Burana and in the world première of Escudero’s opera Gernika. In 1990 he moved to Madrid, entering the Escuela Superior de Canto, studying with Teresa Tourné, Valentín Elcoro, and then Dolores Ripollés and Rafael Senosiaín. In Madrid he sang with the Chorus and Orchestra of the Comunidad de Madrid, appearing as a soloist under leading conductors. In 1993 he moved to the Karlsruhe Musikhochschule to study with Aldo Baldin and, after the latter’s sudden death, with the American Jean Cox. In the Karlsruhe Opera School he took part in various operas, and was able, in Germany, to study Lieder. He continued in Germany with guest appearances in various opera houses, notably in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, and Hamburg. In 1998 he took part in the Aix-en-Provence Festival, with solo rôles in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Britten’s Curlew River and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, productions that toured to Paris, Vienna and elsewhere. Until July 2002 he was a member of the Kassel Staatstheater. His career has brought performances throughout Europe.
