Donald Maxwell (b1948)

Born in Perth, Scotland, Donald Maxwell graduated in Geography from Edinburgh University and studied singing with Joseph Hislop. Following his 1976 Scottish Opera début, he sang with all major British opera companies, and at the Proms, La Scala, The Met., Vienna Staatsoper, Buenos Aires, Houston, Amsterdam and Salzburg, with over a hundred rôles, ranging from Eisenstein to Wozzeck. A twenty-five year association with Welsh National Opera includes a noted portrayal of Falstaff. Amongst his world premières are works by Holt, Manoury, Harle, Berio and Eötvös. Recordings include Sir John in Love, Noye’s Fludde, Kismet, Carmina Burana and several Savoy Operas. Director of the National Opera Studio 2001–2008, Donald Maxwell has been closely associated with the Buxton Festival as performer and director.
