Turku Philharmonic Orchestra

The Turku Philharmonic Orchestra is the oldest symphony orchestra in Scandinavia, as well as one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the whole world. Founded in 1790, when Turku was still the capital of Finland, the orchestra has done its best to follow the musical trends of Central Europe despite the great geographical distance. In the early days of the orchestra, some works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven were performed as contemporary music, sometimes only within a year of the release of the work by the editors. Since then, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra has followed its great tradition of being led by some of the finest conductors of the country, including Tauno Hannikainen, Toivo Haapanen, Jorma Panula, Pertti Pekkanen, and Hannu Lintu. In the most recent years, regular conductors of the orchestra have also been Igor Bezrodnyi, Jacques Mercier and Tibor Bogányi. The position is currently being held by the Finnish conductor Petri Sakari (who has also recorded the complete symphonies of Sibelius for Naxos). In 2012, another well-known Finnish conductor, Leif Segerstam, will become chief conductor of the orchestra. The City of Turku was designated by the European Union as the European Capital of Culture for the year 2011.
