Iasi Moldova Philharmonic Orchestra

The Iaşi Moldova State Philharmonic Orchestra held its inaugural concert on 9 October 1942, conducted by George Enescu. In the following decade it developed its repertoire under Radu Constantinescu. From 1962 the orchestra was directed by Ion Baciu who drew on the city of Iaşi to enrol a younger generation of Conservatory students, creating an ensemble that had a significant position in Romanian national musical life and bringing tours abroad, throughout Europe and North America. Ion Baciu was succeeded in 1986 by Gherghe Costin who remained in the post for thirteen years. Gherghe Costin was joined, from 1995 to 2001, by Camil Marinescu and in 1998 by Alexandru Lascae, who is the current resident conductor of the orchestra.
