Established in 1969 from the Grand Orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra has since then gained increasing status as one of the most versatile orchestras in Austria. Since its foundation, the orchestra has concentrated mainly on contemporary music. Under its chief conductors Milan Horvat, Leif Segerstam, Lothar Zagrosek, Pinchas Steinberg, and Dennis Russell Davies, it has continued to expand its repertoire to include music from the pre-classical period up to the avant-garde. Since 2002 Bertrand de Billy has been Chief Conductor of the orchestra.
