David Lively


David Lively holds a prominent place among young American pianists today. He studied in the United States and at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, where he currently lives. He is the laureate of numerous international competitions, the Marguerite Long, which enabled him to meet Claudio Arrau, of whom he became one of the very few pupils, the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, the Tchaikovsky in Moscow, and the Dino Ciani Prize of La Scala, Milan in 1977. He is one of the rare American pianists to lead a truly European career, playing regularly with leading orchestras in the course of European tours. His impressive virtuosity, allied to a deep sensitivity and great musicality enable him to be at home just as much in Baroque or Romantic music as in contemporary music. He turns naturally to American composers of the twentieth century, including Elliott Carter, John Cage or Aaron Copland, of whom he has recorded the most important works.
