Steven Mayer

Lauded by the press, Steven Mayer has brought jazz greats Art Tatum and “Fats” Waller to listeners worldwide, together with acclaimed interpretations of Ives, Liszt and Mozart. He has collaborated with conductors Sir Neville Mariner, Leonard Slatkin, Gerard Schwarz and Edo de Waart, and with such orchestras as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Rotterdam Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony, and has won the Grand Prix du Disque Liszt for his world première recordings of Liszt’s De Profundis and Concerto Opus Posthumous. Steven Mayer has been Professor of Piano at the Manhattan School of Music and is on the faculty of the International Keyboard Institute at Mannes College of Music. restoring to the music material that he had scratched from the orchestral scores in arranging them for piano. Eventually this tinkering led Ives to prepare a second, much revised edition of the Concord Sonata in the late 1940s. (That is basically the version heard in the present recording.)
