In 1739 Joseph Arnold Gross was appointed Court Trumpeter at the Electoral court in Munich. He was also a violinist and in 1746 became concertmaster of the ballet, followed, a year later, by appointment as Spielgraf, with duties extending to the licensing and administration of the activities of itinerant musicians in Bavaria. Gross's compositions included some two hundred fanfares and a Trumpet Concerto, evidence of his own high degree of technical ability.
