Gerald Place read English at Trinity College Cambridge, where he made a special study of the music and literature of the English renaissance. He was also a member of the choir of King’s College.
He began his career with the BBC Singers with whom he appeared frequently as a soloist and for which he also directed several religious broadcasts. At this time he founded the Gesualdo Consort which was given a Gramophone Critic’s Choice award for its ground-breaking performances of Gesualdo’s music. They have toured this repertoire all over Europe, and in addition recorded CDs of English mediaeval and Jacobean music. They were very pleased to be invited to take part in Werner Herzog’s Gesualdo film Death for Five Voices.
