Isabelle Yalkovsky (1906 - 1981)


Isabelle Yalkovsky (Byman) was born in 1906 and appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of thirteen. She attended the Juilliard School of Music, where she studied with Olga Samaroff. After making her début with the New York Philharmonic she gave concerts throughout the United States and Canada, appearing as soloist with the Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston and other orchestras. She taught at Juilliard and for the last ten years of her life at the Manhattan School of Music, where she was head of piano pedagogy. In 1980 she wrote The Piano Teacher’s Art. She died in Bakersfield, California while on vacation in 1981. Isabelle Yalkovsky left few recordings. Her earliest is a ten-inch Victrola disc from 1929 of Leopold Godowsky’s charming Alt-Wien.
