Wout Oosterkamp

The bass-baritone Wout Oosterkamp was born in 1950 and studied singing at the Maastricht Conservatory with Marilyn Tyler and piano with Jean Antonietti. In 1972 he ended his piano study, after which he continued vocal training in Amsterdam as a pupil of the Music Lyceum. His further studies were in Utrecht and Madrid and with the singing teacher Bodi Rapp and with Pierre Bernac. In addition to concerts, recitals and television performances in The Netherlands, Wout Oosterkamp appeared regularly in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Britain (Glyndebourne) and in the United States. He made his début with the Nederlandse Operastichting in 1982 as Ariadeno in Cavalli’s L’Ormindo and sang in the premières of Geert van Keulen’s Aan de Wannsee as Heinrich von Kleist and as the doctor in Jan van Vlijmen’s Un malheureux vêtu de noir. He also performed, among others, the rôle of Don Basilio in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. In 1985 he won the Nederlandse Muziekprijs and in later years made a name as a Lieder and oratorio singer. He taught at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, before retiring in 2003 to join the Benedictines in the monastery at Velp.
