Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra

The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, was founded in 1856. Many leading conductors had guest performances with the orchestra, such as Arturo Toscanini, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Bruno Walter, Richard Strauss, Victor de Sabata, Sir Thomas Beecham, Kiril Kondrachin, Raphael Kubelík, Leopold Stokowski, Charles Munch, Sir John Barbirolli, and Eugene Jochum, Leonard Bernstein. Eric Kleiber, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Zubin Mehta, Sir Georg Solti and Lorin Maazel were also regular guests.

In January 1999 Marek Janowski became the artistic director of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra and the music director/chief conductor in July 2000. Other past music directors have included Louis Fremaux, Paul Paray, Edouard van Remoortel, Igor Markevitch, Lovro von Matacic, Lawrence Foster, and James DePreist. The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra performance during the regular the concert season of Monte-Carlo, and it also accompanies the famous Opera and the Ballets de Monte-Carlo abroad. Its rich history includes the premières of ballets of Serge Diaghilev and operas of Berlioz, Puccini, Ravel and Massenet, among others. The Philharmonic Orchestra has always played a significant rôle in the performance and promotion of contemporary symphonic music and has premièred works by Henri Dutilleux, Marcel Lansowski, Arvo Pärt and Krysztof Penderecki, among others. Its rich discography is a testimony to its musical diversity. Many of the orchestra’s recordings have won recognition with French and international awards.
