American Baroque

Founded in 1986, American Baroque brings together some of America's most accomplished and exciting Baroque instrumentalists. Concerts by American Baroque break the mold of the traditional chamber music recital by incorporating fresh new music composed for the group, and taking the concerto repertoire from the orchestral arena, putting it in the hands of the individual performers. The results are thrilling: a perfect blend of entertainment and authenticity, tradition and innovation, the Old World and the New. American Baroque has been featured at the Tage Alter Musik Festival in Regensburg, Germany; the Berkeley Early Music Festival; the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival; the San Jose Chamber Music Society; and the San Francisco Early Music Society. Based in San Francisco, its members have concertized throughout the world and appear regularly with the finest period-instrument orchestras in North America. The ensemble can be heard on recordings of the Fourth Book of Quartets by Telemann and French Cantatas of the 18th Century with soprano Julianne Baird on Koch International Classics and of Telemann's Paris Quartets on Amon Ra. Other recordings include Quartets by Abel and original music by Roy Whelden, on the New Albion label. Recent projects include the commission of eight new works for old instruments by the New York based composers collective Common Sense. The 1996 release of Boismortier's Sonatas for Flute and Harpsichord, Op. 91, marked the beginning of a long-term contract with Naxos to record chamber music of
