Aurora Quartet

Apostolos Palios

The Aurora Quartet is an international ensemble of pianists that takes up a great tradition of the nineteenth century, when, in the music circles of the aristocracy, on the concert stages and in the conservatories from Paris to Moscow, the performance of music for four pianists was widespread and highly popular. Besides transcriptions of works for orchestra, numerous original compositions were created. The Aurora Quartet was founded by Julia Severus in 2002. It has performed frequently since, including premières and world premières of Mare and Concerto Grosso III by Wolfgang Plagge, Boogie Retention by Bjørn Kruse, Grotesques and Arabesques by Trygve Madsen, and Nocturne by Ulf Grahn. The ensemble has made successful appearances at the Bayreuth Easter Festival, the Musikfestspiele Potsdam-Sanssouci, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Lindemannsaal Oslo and the Festival East-West at the Philharmony Zielona Gora. The Aurora Quartet also cooperates with internationally recognised composers who write pieces especially for them, including a new Hommage à Chopin for four pianos by Rodion Shchedrin.
