George Manahan

Music Director of the New York City Opera, the conductor George Manahan is currently in his seventh season with the company. George Manahan has been a regular guest conductor with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Australia, Seattle Opera and Santa Fe Opera companies. In addition, he has conducted world premières of operas by Judith Weir, Krzysztof Penderecki, Hans Werner Henze, David Lang, Tobias Picker, and Wolfgang Rihm. His orchestral engagements include appearances with many major American Symphonies. He has established a long relationship with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, serving as acting Music Director from 1982 to 1985. He was also principal conductor with the Minnesota Opera from 1988 to 1996 and Music Director of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (Virginia) from 1987 to 1998. Recordings of George Manahan include an album of orchestral works entitled Will Power by pop singer/songwriter Joe Jackson, Steve Reich’s Tehillim, and two albums of twentieth-century concertos for clarinet featuring Richard Stolzmann.
