Michael Stern

Conductor Michael Stern is founding Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the IRIS Orchestra (Germantown, Tennessee), which has been widely acclaimed for the brilliance of its playing, its varied programming with special emphasis on American contemporary music, and for its recordings on the Naxos and Arabesque labels. Their commitment to American composers has produced commissioned works from Stephen Hartke, Richard Danielpour, Edgar Meyer, Jonathan Leshnoff, Adam Schoenberg, and Ellen Taafe Zwilich, among others. Stern is also in his fifth season as Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony, which has been hailed for its remarkable artistic and institutional development under his leadership. Together they have recorded for Naxos as well as for Reference Recordings, with a new disc of the music of Benjamin Britten to be released in the fall of 2009. Stern is also in his second season as Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre National de Lille in France. Stern’s guest conducting engagements include many of the major orchestras in the United States, Europe and Asia, and for four years he was the Chief Conductor of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra in Germany.
