After taking music lessons at home and at the Plauen school of music, Stefan Fraas studied at the Zwickau College of Education Zwickau as well as at the Music Schools in Weimar and Dresden, completing his studies at Zwickau. He started his career in 1988 with the Reichenbach Vogtland Orchestra of which he became chief conductor in 1991.
Appointed music director, he took over the management of the Vogtland Philharmonic in addition to his artistic duties as conductor, in 1995 becoming executive director. His extensive concert activities have taken him to Israel, China, North Cyprus, the United States and numerous European countries. He has conducted performances that attracted considerable attention at music festivals in Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Denmark. His recordings and broadcast and television performances include Rheinberger’s Organ Concertos with Hans Otto, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Stefan Fraas has appeared widely as a guest conductor and since 1998 has been honorary conductor of the Beijing Philharmonic. In 2000 he was appointed chief conductor of the Essen Folkwang Chamber Orchestra. Since 1995 he has been a member of the Saxon Music Council as well as the chairman of the Advisory Council for the cultural region of Vogtland.
