Thomas Wimmer

Thomas Wimmer was born in Austria in 1961 and studied the viola da gamba in Vienna, soon finding a particular interest in music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a field in which he specialised, playing instruments that include the Renaissance viol, the vihuela d'arco, Medieval fiddle and rebec. In 1988 he founded Accentus, further developing his fascination with the multicultural early music traditions of Spain, on which the ensemble concentrates its attention. He has directed courses for strings at the Vienna City Conservatory and at the Higher Institute for Occidental Music in Damascus. With Accentus and as a guest of other ensembles he has appeared in performances in Moscow, Canada, the Middle East, North Africa and throughout Europe and at leading festivals in Austria and elsewhere. He has made over thirty CD recordings.
