Martyn Brabbins is one of Britain's leading and most versatile conducting talents. Associate Principal Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra 1994-2005, he is currently Artistic Director of the Cheltenham International Festival of Music. Following studies in London and Leningrad (with Ilya Musin), he won first prize at the 1988 Leeds Competition. Since then he has conducted most of the major symphony orchestras in Britain, and appears every season with the Philharmonia, BBC Symphony and BBC Scottish Symphony and at the BBC Proms. He is much in demand abroad and in 2007 makes his début with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Brabbins is one of the foremost interpreters of contemporary works and is a regular guest with the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern, and in the Bavarian Radio Symphony's Musica Viva series. Equally at home in the opera house, he has conducted productions at the Kirov, English National, Opera North, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Montpellier and at the Netherlands Opera. Brabbins has made over sixty recordings, including Britten's War Requiem, which is released on Naxos. (8.553558-59)
