Lucero Tena’s art of playing the castañets is quite remarkable. It is well known that the instrument has a long history, derived from the crotales of the ancient world. It has come to have a particular place in Spanish dance, whether popular or classical. Some dancers have stood out for their skill in playing the castanets, but none of them has made it an art in itself, a means of aesthetic expression. It has rested with Lucero Tena to achieve this, with her rhythmic sensibility, balance of the varied possible sonorities, and unique mastery of the instrument.
Various composers have written for this great artist, including Joaquín Rodrigo, who in 1966 composed and dedicated to her Two Spanish Dances. In the course of a distinguished career Lucero Tena has appeared in concert halls throughout the world, collaborating with conductors that have included Mstislav Rostropovich, Rafael Frü hbeckde Burgos, Jesús López Cobos, Sergiu Comisiona, Franz-Paul Decker and Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, and with orchestras that have included the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, among others. She has also appeared in recital with guitar or piano accompaniment.
