Mariusz Smolij

The American Symphony Orchestra League in New York City listed him as one of the most promising young conductors in America and featured him during its special Conductors Preview. In 2001 he made his highly acclaimed début at New York’s Carnegie Hall with the Polish Sinfonia Varsovia. His frequent collaboration with this premier Polish ensemble led to concert tours of Japan, France and the United States, as well as number of recordings and broadcasts. In 2002 he made his Paris conducting début with the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux in the Salle Gaveau, in 2004 he conducted the Rotterdam Chamber Orchestra in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and in 2005 the Basel Symphony Orchestra in the Tonhalle in Zurich.

As the Music Director of the Wrocław Philharmonic in Poland, he conducted the orchestra at the Rheingau Festival in Germany, the Janáček Festival in the Czech Republic, a special concert in Strasbourg for the opening of the Year of Polish Culture in France, as well as the 2005 American tour with performances in New York and Philadelphia among others. Mariusz Smolij served, at the invitation of Christoph Eschenbach, as the Resident Conductor of the Houston Symphony (2000–2003), was on the faculty at the Northwestern University School of Music (1996–2000) and worked as conductor of the New Jersey Symphony (1994–1997). He was the Artistic Director of the International Festival Wratislavia Cantans and the Wrocław Philharmonic (2002–2004).

He is currently Music Director of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra in Lafayette, Louisiana and Riverside Symphonia in New Jersey. He is also an accomplished violinist and was the founder of the internationally recognized Penderecki String Quartet, performing and recording with this ensemble in Poland, Germany, France, Italy and the United States. He has recorded for Naxos and other labels. He has also made numerous broadcasts for Polish National Radio as well as American National Public Radio.
