Nicholas Cleobury (b1950)

Nicholas Cleobury, conductor

Nicholas Cleobury has established a considerable reputation as a conductor in the concert hall, opera house and recording studio. He studied with Sir Adrian Boult and served as assistant to leading conductors such as Bernstein, Boulez and Haitink. He is now music director of the Britten Sinfonia, with which he has made a number of acclaimed recordings. Nicholas Cleobury has conducted most of the leading British orchestras, including the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and has established an international reputation with appearances throughout Europe, in Australia and the United States of America, not least in a number of important opera houses. He has also worked with many leading choirs and in 1997 became principal conductor of the Oxford Bach Choir. He has done much to champion the cause of contemporary music, directing over a hundred first performances of new works with ensembles well known in this field. He records regularly for the BBC and European radio stations and has made a number of very successful commercial recordings with leading British companies.
