Paul Hillier is a conductor, singer and writer. Earlier in his career he was director of the Hilliard Ensemble and in 1990 founded The Theatre of Voices. For over ten years he taught in America, first at the University of California at Davis and then as director of the Early Music Institute at Indiana University School of Music. He moved back to Europe in 2003 where he now works as chief conductor of Ars Nova Copenhagen and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and as a freelance guest conductor around the world. His recordings, over a hundred CDs, have earned international recognition, winning numerous prizes and three Grammy nominations. He has published numerous essays on music and written books about Arvo Pärt and Steve Reich. In 2002 he was made an Honorary Professor of Music at the University of Copenhagen; in 2004 he received the Estonian Cultural Prize; and in 2006 he was awarded an O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire) for services to choral music. He lives in Copenhagen and is the proud father of Clara, Kaia, and Freya.
