Simon Nabatov


The pianist Simon Nabatov was born in Moscow in 1959 and began his study of the piano with his father at the age of three, followed by training at the Central Music School and Conservatory in Moscow. After his family’s emigration to the United States, he continued his studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, giving principal attention to jazz and improvisation and winning prizes in a number of international jazz competitions. From 1989 to 1991 he taught at the Essen Folkwang-Hochschule and from 1991 to 1993 at the International Jazz and Rock Academy in Remscheid. Since 1998 he has worked at the Musikhochschule in Lucerne. He has collaborated with, among others, Kenny Wheeler, Herb Robertson, Marty Ehrlich, Mark Dresser, Ed Schuller and Ron McClure, and regularly appears with the Ray Anderson Quartet, the NDR-Bigband, Steve Lacy, Nils Wogram and the Perry Robinson Quartet. He has appeared as a soloist and in chamber music with Mark Helias, Tom Rainey, Phil Minton und Frank Gratkowski, among others. His activities have included numerous broadcasts and recordings.
