Renee Doria (b1921)

The soprano Renée Doria, one of the leading French lyric coloratura sopranos of her generation, was born in Perpignan in 1921. She was educated in Marseilles, where she gave her first professional concert at the age of eighteen. She made her stage début, also at Marseilles, in 1942 as Rosina in The Barber of Seville. The following year she appeared in Paris at the Théâtre Gaîté Lyrique singing Delibes’s Lakmé, the rôle in which she made her début at the Paris Opéra-Comique in 1946. She developed a highly successful career in this house, singing there throughout the 1950s in parts such as, Philine (Mignon), Violetta (La Traviata), Norina (Don Pasquale), and the title rôle in Mireille. She made her début at the Paris Opéra in 1947 as the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, and sang Gilda in the nine hundredth performance there of Rigoletto. She also sang throughout the French provinces (for instance at Lyons, Marseilles, Strasbourg and Vichy) and in Belgium, the Low Countries and Switzerland, in a repertoire that extended to more than seventy rôles. In addition she sang baroque music and took part in contemporary operas such as Poulenc’s Les Dialogues des carmélites.
