The American soprano Christine Brewer enjoys the highest reputation, and her appearances in opera, concert and recital are marked with her own unique timbre, at once warm and brilliant, combined with a vibrant personality and emotional honesty unique in her generation of vocalists. Her professional career began with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and her affiliation with that company includes appearances as Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes, the title rôle of Ariadne auf Naxos, Don Giovanni, and the title rôle of Haydn’s Armida in their 1995 season, in which she also was featured in their 20th season anniversary gala concert. Her recordings include a contribution to Hyperion’s prestigious Schubert series with pianist Graham Johnson, and the Janáček Glagolitic Mass and Dvořák Te Deum with Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony, in addition to solo recital recordings produced and released by the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Her work in opera has taken her to leading opera houses in rôles ranging from that of Donna Anna at Covent Garden, New York City Opera, Florida Grand Opera and the Edinburgh Festival to that of Iphigenie in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride in Edinburgh, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid, and of Ariadne at Santa Fe Opera and the English National Opera, among many other acclaimed collaborations.
