Born in Mainz, the baritone Christoph Johannes Wendel studied at the Mannheim and Würzburg Musikhochschule and at the Salzburg Mozarteum. His teachers included Erika Köth, Hans Hotter, Ingrid Bjoner and Regina Resnik. He has been a prize-winner in a number of competitions and took first prizes at the State Opera Budapest and in the Toti dal Monte International Singing Competition. He made his début at the Budapest State Opera as Papageno, a rôle he also undertook at theatres in Treviso, Rovigo, Bassano del Grappa and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. From 1994 to 1997 he was a member of the international opera studio of Hamburg State Opera and the following year sang with the Hamburg Chamber Opera and at the Mainz State Theatre, as well as in Gotha. His concert career has brought appearances in Mozart Weeks in Würzburg, as well as in Schleswig-Holstein and Ansbach. He has a number of broadcasts and television appearances to his credit, together with recordings.
