The Slovak pianist Tomáš Nemec was born in 1970 at Humenné, where he began his basic studies in various arts disciplines. At the age of fifteen he entered the Košice Conservatory, studying the piano there with Professor Kojanová. In 1991 he became a student at the Bratislava High School of Arts in the piano class of Marián Lapšanský. Between 1988 and 1996 he took part in various competitions, winning a number of prizes in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. He participated in master-classes with Lazar Berman, Halina Czerny-Stefanska, Marián Lapšanský and Peter Toperczer and in 1996 was one of the finalists of the International Tribune of Young Interpreters of TIJIUNESCO in Lisbon, where he was the soloist in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto in B flat minor.
