Laszlo Czidra

László Czidra was born in 1940 in Budapest and was originally an oboist, trained at the Liszt Academy, where he completed his studies in 1963. He soon became one of the most distinguished recorder-players, in 1969 founding and for decades leading the renowned Camerata Hungarica early music ensemble. He appeared also with the Ex Antiquiis between 1968 and 1978. His skills as a musicologist brought numerous publications of early music, mostly Hungarian of the Baroque and Renaissance periods, with the Hungarian music publishing company Editio Musica Budapest. From 1979 he served as a professor of the Liszt Academy, teaching early music performance. Besides travelling widely from New Zealand to the United States on concert tours, he also found time to teach at the Weiner Conservatory in Budapest. In 1981 he was awarded the Hungarian Liszt Prize. He had more than thirty recordings to his credit, with appearances as a soloist in a repertoire that included the Brandenburg Concertos, works by Telemann, and sonatas and concertos by Vivaldi. He died in 2001.
